Join us for a scintillating seminar with international guest Professor René Matteotti of the University of Zurich on the Swiss approach to tax treaties and Ms Ronita Ram of the Treasury with an Australian tax treaty update, chaired by Professor Michael Kobetsky.

Professor René Matteotti, University of ZurichProfessor René Matteotti holds the Chair in Swiss, European, and International Tax Law at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. In 2007, René completed his professorial thesis which was a monograph on the relevance of Substance-over-Form in Swiss and US tax law, supported by a fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation at Northwestern University. René has actively contributed to tax policy including serving on the Steering Committee of the Federal Tax Administration for the Corporate Tax Reform and the working group of the Federal Tax Administration on the implementation of the GloBE Minimum Tax in Switzerland. He is a member of the scientific committee of the European Association of Tax Law Professors and the Permanent Scientific Committee of the International Fiscal Association. René was the General Reporter at the IFA 2023 Congress on the topic “Sharing and shifting of corporate losses – The new profit shifting?”. René also has extensive experience as a practising tax lawyer, and expert witness including dispute resolution, tax arbitration, transfer pricing and the GloBE. |

Ronita Ram, Director, Australian TreasuryRonita is a Director in the International Tax Branch at Australian Treasury and Australia’s chief tax treaty negotiator. Ronita is currently leading a number of treaty negotiations to expand Australia’s tax treaty network. Ronita is responsible for providing policy advice to the Australian Government on international tax and tax treaty issues. She is also Australia’s delegate to the OECD on tax treaty issues (OECD Working Party 1). Ronita has 18 years’ experience at Treasury working on tax and corporate law policy. She completed a Master of Laws, Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and Bachelor of Commerce at the Australian National University. |

Professor Mike Kobetsky, ANU and University of Melbourne (Chair)Mike is an Honorary Professor at the Australian National University College of Law, a Fellow at the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute at the Crawford School of Public Policy and a Principal Fellow at the University of Melbourne Law School. He is an inaugural member of the United Nations Sub-Committee on Transfer Pricing and the United Nations Sub-Committee on Extractive Industries Taxation Issues for Developing Countries and a member of the International Fiscal Association. Mike researches and teaches in transfer pricing, tax treaties, and international anti-avoidance measures and has published extensively on international taxation in journals in Australia, Canada and Europe. Mike was a Global Professor of Law at New York University Law School (2013–14 & 2019–20), a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University, Faculty of Law, Centre for Tax Law and Wolfson College, Cambridge (2012) and he was a Visiting Professor at the Western University Law School (Ontario, Canada) (2011–12, 2016–17 & 2018–19). Mike has worked as a consultant for the OECD, United Nations, USAID, the World Bank, IMF, GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation which is the German government’s foreign-aid organization), and AusAID. |
